George E. Merritt, a Somers, New York, resident for more than 50 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at age 98. Born in Yonkers, New York, on June 15, 1927, he was the son of the late George and Madeline Merritt.
During World War II, George enlisted in the Navy as a young teenager, an experience that helped shape the strength of character that guided him throughout his life. As a young father of five, he earned a business degree from Pace College in New York City. He spent much of his career in chemical sales management and devoted himself deeply to his community and faith. After retiring, he served for many years as president of Condo 26 at Heritage Hills in Somers. He was also a devoted parishioner and usher at St. Joseph's Church. George was an avid fan of the New York Mets.
George married Nannette Bove on May 22, 1954, and remained a devoted and loving husband for more than 72 years. He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters, Rosemary and Madeline, and his son, Peter. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nannette; his children, George Merritt (Kathleen), Gayle Piper, Peter's widow, Cindy Merritt, Nanette Walker, and Anthony Merritt (Michele); as well as 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
George's devotion to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was evident in both his words and actions. Whether he was cheering from the sidelines, coaching Little League, or teaching his family how to fish, he was always present for those he loved. He lived a full and meaningful life and was loved wherever he went. His greatest legacy is the family he cherished so deeply.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Somers, NY, on June 18 at 11:30 AM, followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery in Somers.
